So why buy Lying Abroad?
Shipment schedule, offer times and
additional charges
Bordeaux is offered in the May following the vintage*, and are shipped 20 - 28 months later. Burgundy & Rhône are offered 16 - 18 months following the vintage, and are shipped during the following 6 - 14 months. Port is only offered in a declared vintage around 2 years after the vintage, and shipment follows during the next 6 months. * Vintage time for these wines ranges from August to October All our lying abroad
offers show the cost of the wine which is payable now. Additional
charges levied at shipment time (unless you specify 'under
bond' when you placed your order) are per 12x 75cl:
£23.50 for still/table wines £32.00 for port (fortified) plus VAT - charged at the prevailing rate on the above shipping charges and on the original purchase price. There are no quantity discounts available on wines offered lying abroad. If you wish your wines
to be stored under bond, you must tell us you require Under
Bond storage when you place your lying abroad order.
Storage duty paid and under bond Tanners offer temperature controlled, fully
insured 'duty paid' storage at £9.00 per dozen per annum and at
£5.00 per half dozen, inclusive of VAT and full insurance. There is
an initial £3.00 taking in charge per item. Wines purchased from
Tanners can be stored duty paid in our Cellars at Wyle Cop,
Shrewsbury. All cellarage terms are in accordance with The
Bunch code of practice. Please contact John

Investing in Wine With the fluctuations in performance of the
stock market and low returns on investment accounts, we are being
asked more and more about investing in wine. At Tanners we have not
used the term investment to sell wine since the 1966 vintage. Of
course we would love you to invest all your money in wine but it
may not be financially prudent to do so!
Many of our customers enjoy buying their wine early ‘lying abroad’ or ‘en primeur’ when they have the pick of the harvest. Long term, over a number of vintages, customers will have paid less for their wine and they will have enough of the best to cover their future drinking. We have always said that, ‘If you have a bit left after your drinking, long term, you will invariably get your money back and a little more’. People who make spectacular returns on odd cases will tell you about it, but they will keep quiet about the modest performance of the rest. Wine prices on the secondary market are extremely volatile. They are highly responsive to down turns in the economy and reputations are easily destroyed by the verdicts of one or two very influential journalists. You should think long term and take an overall view. Don’t restrict yourself to fine clarets and vintage Ports, there are plenty of wines from many corners of the world which will provide wonderful future drinking. |
