![]() Customers keep telling us that they like less powerful, less alcoholic wines and here in Beaujolais you have them: reds with light juicy flavours and just enough tannin and acidity to make them moreish and delicious. Beaujolais is north-west of Lyon, and the Gamay grape reigns supreme. Gamay grown on the granite and sandy soils, then fermented largely as whole, uncrushed berries, gives Beaujolais its characteristic juiciness. There are broadly speaking two areas of Beaujolais: one hilly area to the north which is home to the famous Beaujolais ‘cru’ villages and one flattish area to the south which is the source of most AC Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau. Our cru wines include the Perroud family’s Regnié, Domaine de la Chaponne in Morgon, Fleurie from Serge Colonge and one of Moulin-à-Vent’s best producers, Jacky Janodet. Jacky’s son Jérome Janodet has inherited Domaine des Vieilles Caves in Chénas from his grandfather, Fernand Charvet, an old-time Tanners supplier. The wine is already a softer and more lovely Beaujolais than in the past.
